The OTT expansion was announced at Mobile World Congress, being held this week in Barcelona.

Although no official release date has been announced, Peru will likely be the first country to welcome Movistar Play before summer.

“We have 1.2 million subs to Movistar TV in Peru and we want to close 2016 with over 1.3 million, which is why we will bring all our new video features to the market,” said Jose Antonio Cassinelli, director, residential services, Telefónica Peru.

Movistar Play is a multiscreen platform with a wide video-on-demand (VOD) catalogue and access to some live linear networks. The service is available for mobile and connected devices, computers and smart TVs.

Indeed, Telefónica will also be launching its smart set-top box (STB), Smart Deco, in Peru this year. The wireless box enables any TV to become smart, making it possible to install different apps and access the VOD catalogue on the main screen.

In addition to boosting its OTT presence, Telefónica plans to expand within Latin America this year by increasing its HD offering, investing in differential content and developing new VOD and TV everywhere services.
